Add the Upstash MCP server to VS Code (GitHub Copilot)
Manage Upstash Redis, QStash and other Upstash resources through the Upstash Developer API.
1. Add the server
Run in your terminal
code --add-mcp '{"name":"upstash","command":"npx","args":["-y","@upstash/mcp-server"],"env":{"UPSTASH_EMAIL":"<your UPSTASH_EMAIL>","UPSTASH_API_KEY":"<your UPSTASH_API_KEY>"}}'Scopes, env vars, OAuth and limits: VS Code (GitHub Copilot) MCP config guide
2. Sign in
VS Code opens the sign-in flow when Copilot first calls a remote OAuth server. Upstash runs locally and needs UPSTASH_EMAIL, UPSTASH_API_KEY. Replace the placeholder values above with your own before starting VS Code (GitHub Copilot).
3. Try it
Ask VS Code (GitHub Copilot) for something Upstash can do. Manage Upstash Redis, QStash and other Upstash resources through the Upstash Developer API. Approve the first tool call and check the result before allowing write actions automatically.
- · mcp.json uses a top-level servers key, not mcpServers.
