What the Braintrust MCP server can do

Authentication

OAuth 2.0 with dynamic client registration (recommended, no API key needed), or an API key sent as Authorization: Bearer.

  • EU data plane: https://api-eu.braintrust.dev/mcp.
  • Self-hosted: your Braintrust API URL with /mcp appended, shown under Settings, Data plane.
  • Setup guides for 14 clients, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, VS Code and Zed.
  • Gemini CLI needs the address in httpUrl, not url.

Good to know

  • Streamable HTTP only. SSE-only clients can't connect.
  • Remove the retired Braintrust MCP plugin before adding the server in Claude Code or Codex.
  • Write tools act with your account's permissions. edit_dataset_rows can permanently delete rows.
  • run_eval creates an experiment and incurs compute and model usage.
  • sql_query results over 1 MB come back as a signed URL. add_to_dataset and edit_dataset_rows take up to 1,000 rows per call on hosted Braintrust.
