What the Couchbase MCP server can do

Authentication

Self-hosted server that connects with CB_CONNECTION_STRING plus CB_USERNAME and CB_PASSWORD (or a client certificate and key for mTLS). Optional OAuth 2.1 (JWT/JWKS) when run over Streamable HTTP for shared deployments.

Options

  • Read-only mode is on by default; set CB_MCP_READ_ONLY_MODE=false to allow writes and data-modifying SQL++
  • Disable tools or require user confirmation per tool
  • Transports: stdio (default), Streamable HTTP and SSE (CB_MCP_TRANSPORT)
  • Works with Couchbase Capella and self-managed clusters; a separate Operational Insights server is included
  • Install from PyPI (couchbase-mcp-server) or Docker

Good to know

  • Some tools (cluster metrics, index stats, query vitals) work only on self-managed Couchbase Server 7.6+ and are not registered on Capella
  • Vector queries need Couchbase Server 8.0+ GSI vector indexes or 7.6+ Search, plus a configured embedding provider
  • The product collects usage data by default
  • Tool disabling guides the model; the Couchbase user's RBAC is the real security boundary
