What the Microsoft Fabric (local) MCP server can do

From Microsoft's own MCP documentation.

Authentication

Docs tools need no sign-in. Live OneLake and Fabric tools use your Azure CLI login (az login) or a service principal with a certificate or client secret set through AZURE_TENANT_ID, AZURE_CLIENT_ID and AZURE_CLIENT_CERTIFICATE_PATH or AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET.

Options

  • Install through the Fabric MCP Server VS Code extension (recommended), npx @microsoft/fabric-mcp, or a .NET source build.
  • API documentation and best practices tools work offline.
  • Microsoft also runs separate remote Fabric servers (Core, Data Warehouse, Eventhouse and more). This entry is the local one.

Good to know

  • The OneLake tools include upload, delete and create directory, so they can change data. Check which identity and workspace are in use first.
  • Service principal support depends on the API and item type, and Fabric REST calls need the service principal tenant setting.
  • Local means the server runs on your machine. It does not mean the client or model processes data locally.
  • Tool names can change between releases.
