What to know
- First published September 3, 2024; v2 of the proposal was last modified August 10, 2026.
- v2 allows the file at any path, covering the pages under it, not only at the site root.
- It also proposes clean markdown copies of pages at the same URL with .md appended.
- The proposal notes adoption by thousands of sites, documentation platforms, and Chrome Lighthouse agentic browsing checks.
When to use it
Use it when you want coding agents and AI assistants to find your docs or product information quickly and cheaply.
