Authentication

OAuth 2.0 through Metabase's embedded OAuth server with dynamic client registration. Tokens are scoped (agent:content:read, agent:content:write, agent:query:run, agent:sql:run, agent:delivery:write) and never exceed your Metabase permissions.

  • Built into Metabase and served by your own instance; the legacy /api/mcp path still works
  • Inline interactive charts with drill-through in Claude, Cursor, VS Code and ChatGPT once an admin enables them

Good to know

  • An admin must turn on the MCP server in Admin, AI, MCP, and it stays off if all AI features are disabled
  • No Metabase AI provider is needed; your client brings the model
  • Clients that cannot render inline charts, like Claude Code, do not list visualize_query
  • Clients connected before Metabase 0.64 must sign in again after upgrading
