What to know
- Specs are released as dated snapshots (2025-09-29, 2025-12-12, 2026-01-16, 2026-01-30, 2026-04-17), with ongoing work in an unreleased folder.
- The 2026-04-17 release covers cart, product feed, orders, authentication and MCP.
- Earlier releases added capability negotiation, a payment handlers framework and an extensions framework (first extension: discounts).
- ChatGPT was the first agent to implement it and Stripe the first payment provider, using its Shared Payment Token.
- Open source under Apache 2.0, with OpenAPI and JSON Schema definitions.
When to use it
Use it when you want your store's checkout to be buyable from ChatGPT or other ACP agents through your existing commerce backend and payment provider.
