What the Power BI Modeling (Authoring) MCP server can do

From Microsoft's own MCP documentation.

Authentication

Microsoft Entra ID interactive sign-in, or a service principal. Operations run with the signed-in user's Fabric permissions.

Options

  • The local server is generally available and runs over stdio. Install from the VS Code extension, npx @microsoft/powerbi-modeling-mcp --start, or a standalone executable.
  • A hosted version (preview) runs at https://api.fabric.microsoft.com/v1/mcp/powerbi/authoring.
  • Only the local server supports Power BI Desktop, PBIP files on disk, service principal sign-in, transactions and traces.
  • Tools are grouped by object type (tables, columns, measures, relationships). The full list is in the GitHub repo.

Good to know

  • The local server does not support macOS. Use the hosted server on a Mac.
  • It only does modeling. It cannot change report pages or diagram layouts.
  • DAX query tools have a hard limit of 100,000 rows.
  • Needs Write or Build permission on the model. With only Build it can just run DAX queries. Fabric workspace models need the XMLA endpoint set to Read Write.
  • Do not register the local and hosted servers together, since the overlapping tools confuse routing and cost tokens.
  • Not meant for answering business questions. Microsoft points to Fabric IQ for that.
  • Back up the model first, ideally as PBIP files in Git.
