Amp

Amp Skills: SKILL.md Folders, amp skill add and Search Order

How do I create or install a skill in Amp?

Create a folder with a SKILL.md in .agents/skills/ for the project, or install one with amp skill add <source>. The frontmatter needs a name and a description. Amp shows the model each skill's name and description, and loads the rest of SKILL.md only when the skill is invoked.

SKILL.md format

.agents/skills/my-skill/SKILL.md

---
name: my-skill
description: A description of what this skill does
---

# My Skill Instructions

Detailed instructions for the agent...

Scripts, templates and reference files can sit in the same folder. The agent reaches them by paths relative to the skill folder.

Install from GitHub, Git or a local path

Terminal

amp skill add <source>
amp skill add <source> --global
amp skills list --json

--global installs to ~/.config/agents/skills/ on the current machine only. You can also ask Amp in a thread, for example: Create a project skill for deploying this app to staging.

Where Amp looks, in order

  • ~/.config/agents/skills/
  • ~/.agents/skills/
  • ~/.config/amp/skills/
  • .agents/skills/ in the project and parent directories
  • .claude/skills/ in those directories, then ~/.claude/skills/ and ~/.claude/plugins/cache/
  • Directories in amp.skills.path
  • Your personal skills repository, your workspace skills repository, then official Amp skills

The first skill with a given name wins. Set amp.skills.disableClaudeCodeSkills to skip the Claude-compatible folders.

Reload after changes

Ask Amp to reload your skills, which runs the reload_skills tool. Running amp skills list in another shell does not reload an existing session.

Attach MCP servers to a skill

Add an mcp.json next to SKILL.md, or an mcpServers field in the frontmatter. If both exist, Amp uses mcpServers. Tools from a skill-only server stay hidden until the skill loads.

.agents/skills/linear/mcp.json

{
	"linear": {
		"url": "https://mcp.linear.app/sse",
		"includeTools": ["list_issues", "create_issue", "update_issue"]
	}
}

Get Amp settings changes by email

When a setting, flag or permission rule in this guide changes, it goes in the weekly AgentAtlas update, checked against the vendor docs. One email a week.
