Factory Droid
Factory Droid MCP Setup: droid mcp add, mcp.json Locations and /mcp
How do I add an MCP server to Factory Droid?
Run droid mcp add with a name, a URL or command, and --type stdio, http or sse. Servers you add this way go into your user config at ~/.factory/mcp.json, and a project can share servers in .factory/mcp.json. Type /mcp inside Droid to see status, tools, OAuth and enable or disable servers.
Add, list and remove servers from the CLI
Basic commands
droid mcp add <name> <urlOrCommand...> --type <stdio|http|sse> droid mcp list droid mcp remove <name>
The --type flag picks the transport. It defaults to stdio when you leave it out.
Examples for remote and local servers
HTTP server
droid mcp add linear https://mcp.linear.app/mcp --type http
HTTP server with an API key header
droid mcp add twelvelabs https://mcp.twelvelabs.io --type http \ --header "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY"
Local stdio server with an env var
droid mcp add airtable "npx -y airtable-mcp-server" \ --env AIRTABLE_API_KEY=your_key
- --env KEY=VALUE works for stdio servers only and can be repeated.
- --header "KEY: VALUE" works for http and sse servers only and can be repeated.
- --no-oauth turns off OAuth for a remote server that uses a header or API key.
Where mcp.json lives
- User: ~/.factory/mcp.json. Available in every project.
- Folder: .factory/mcp.json in a parent folder of the project. Shared across nested projects.
- Project: .factory/mcp.json in the project root. This file is meant to be committed for the team.
You cannot remove project servers with droid mcp remove or /mcp. Edit the project file directly.
mcp.json format
.factory/mcp.json
{
"mcpServers": {
"linear": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://mcp.linear.app/mcp",
"disabled": false
}
}
}Stdio servers use command, args and env instead of url and headers. Keep secrets out of the project file because it is committed. Put them in the user config or in environment variables.
Manage servers with /mcp
- Browse servers and see connection status.
- View each server's tools.
- Enable or disable a server without removing it.
- Sign in to OAuth servers in the browser, or clear stored auth.
- Add servers from the registry and remove user servers.
- Run /mcp off to turn off every configurable server for the current session. Organization managed servers are not affected.
