Cline Auto Approve and YOLO Mode: Run Commands and Edits Without Prompts

How do I make Cline stop asking for approval?

Turn on the Auto Approve toggles you want, such as Read project files or Execute safe commands. To approve everything, open Cline Settings, then Features, and check YOLO Mode. YOLO mode disables all safety checks, so use it only in throwaway or sandboxed projects.

Auto Approve toggles

  • Read project files: read, list and search files in your workspace.
  • Read all files: read outside your workspace. Needs the base toggle.
  • Edit project files: create and edit files in your workspace.
  • Edit all files: edit outside your workspace. Needs the base toggle.
  • Execute safe commands: run commands the model marks as safe.
  • Execute all commands: run commands that need approval. Needs the base toggle.
  • Use the browser: web fetching and searching.
  • Use MCP servers: MCP tools and resources.
  • Enable notifications: alerts for long-running commands.

How safe commands are decided

Cline has no fixed allowlist. The model sets a requires_approval flag on each command. Commands like npm test or git status are commonly treated as safe. Commands like npm install, rm -rf, mv and sed -i commonly need approval.

Turn on YOLO mode

Go to Cline Settings, then Features, and check YOLO Mode. There is no confirmation dialog. Uncheck it to turn it off.

  • All file operations anywhere on your system
  • All terminal commands, including destructive ones
  • Browser actions and MCP server tools
  • Mode transitions from Plan to Act

Recommended default

Enable Read project files and leave edits, commands, browser and MCP off until you need them. If you enable edits, use Checkpoints so you can roll back.

Notifications

With notifications on, Cline sends an OS notification when approval is needed, and when an auto-approved terminal command has run for 30 seconds.

Get Cline settings changes by email

When a setting, flag or permission rule in this guide changes, it goes in the weekly AgentAtlas update, checked against the vendor docs. One email a week.
